Alan is a second generation artist of Chinese and European heritage. This diverse Asian background exposed him to the artful expressions of two distinctly different cultures. French calligraphy, European artwork, Chinese calligraphy and paintings, Alan was exposed a wide variety of artistic expression throughout his early life.

Calligraphy was one of the first art forms Alan learned while in high school. It was a natural extension of his studies in watercolor and very detailed application to other art forms. He found work with Crane Paper Company and Tiffany & Company as a calligrapher for commissions all through college days. Cursive calligraphy was an early specialty, yet ultimately Alan designed his own calligraphy style fashioned after the 15th Century French Cadel Capitals used for important documents and manuscripts. These were originally done in black & white, yet Alan took this art form so much farther with vibrant color and a flowing ribbon-like dimensionality that elevates the style. This was developed over a 10-year period of experimentation.

A graduate of the School of Art at Kutztown State University and Columbia University, Alan learned traditional techniques while experimenting with alchemy. As a chemistry minor, he studied the effects of different chemicals and watercolor inks. The results were often uncontrollable, but can be beautiful. In honor of the Chinese New Year, the Asian Zodiac Animal Symbols series of the 'T W E L V E' is featured here. Each of the twelve animals are done in watercolor paint and inks on heavy cold press Arches Watercolor Paper measuring 18 inches by 24 inches all completed in Pen & Ink Watercolor.

Alan has a deep appreciation for the Insects of the world. As a child he studied them in his garden and ultimately collected thousands of specimens and studied their life habits. His recent Colorful Insects Series is here and for sale at: alanabrahamartstudio.com
